Gum disease is the gateway to a host of other problems affecting not just the oral cavity but the body in its entirety. Fortunately prevention is not hard and with just a bit of know how and information you, too, will have the power to keep this most destructive of oral diseases at bay. There is no mystery on how to accomplish this and by following several simple steps you are on your road to continued oral health.
Prevent gum disease in eight easy steps:
Prevent gum disease by using the right toothbrush. Far too often the toothbrushes found in homes across the nation are either old, ragged, or lack bristles. Consult with your dental health care provider for advice on which kind of brush to purchase.
Use toothpaste that contains no harsh chemicals. Although most toothpaste is fairly much created equal, some bargain basement brands seek to cut the more expensive ingredients by using harsher chemicals and then masking the aftertaste by adding more mint. Natural toothpastes are always the best choice, but even if you do not want to go the natural route, ask your dentist what toothpaste she or he would recommend.
Floss your teeth regularly with the kind of string indicated by your dental setup. If your teeth are very close together, you will benefit from using the band floss, while others may use other kinds. Shred proof is always a good idea.
Employ all of the oral hygiene products twice a day (at least) and in between meals whenever possible.
Rinse your mouth with a mouthwash that is not alcohol based and thus will not dry out your mucous membranes and impact the formation of saliva. The latter is vital in that it serves to wash away bacteria continuously.
Make and keep two yearly appointments with your dentist, six months apart. These are imperative to ensure that any budding problems are noted and dealt with in a timely manner. If you are dissatisfied with the preventive service you receive at your dentist’s office or if you do not seem to be able to have a good working relationship with the dentist, do not hesitate to seek out another dental health care provider with whom you might be able to work better.
If you require at some point any dental work to be done, be mindful of the follow up instructions. You can prevent gum disease from taking hold for the first time – or again – by following all the instructions given to you by your dentist and also taking and finishing antibiotics that might have been prescribed as part of your treatment.
Last but not least, be mindful of your diet. Eat healthy foods and limit sugary snacks. If you do indulge in candy and other refined sugar treats, brush your teeth afterwards to minimize any damage bacteria might be doing to your teeth. Although this might appear to be a bit like overkill, consider the fact that to prevent gum disease you need to prevent the buildup of an environment favorable to bacteria bent on destruction.
